01 About
My name is Marc Aurel, I'm a Munich based artist, former assistant to Professor Markus Oehlen at the Academy of Arts in Munich and currently represented by the gallery Max Weber Six Friedrich, which is also located in Munich.
Everything I do as an artist, which translates into the artworks I create, stems from the two following fundamental beliefs: time as a concept, as well as (art) history regarding to their particular interdependence and dynamic. Thus, social and cultural problems relating to humanity and its evolution are always at the very heart of what I try to evaluate and pick out as a central theme.
The impetus of these iterative processes isn’t purely intellectual, but deeply personal: being born into a multicultural family with Jewish roots, at the same time having Muslim kin and a traditional Christian upbringing, I’ve come to ask myself from quite early on: “What is the origin of religion?” To this day, fundamental questions like this are a huge part of the artworks I create and my identity as an artist.
In a broader sense of this evolution, the quantum change of the homo digitalis is the focal point in these discussions in terms of, “How do social media channels such as Instagram change the art market and how is art perceived in general through this lense? What defines art and painting in the digital age and who has the institutional sovereignty to decide this? To what extent does Instagram prepossess the function of a digital, social museum?”
By taking this into account, my approach is both holistic and interdisciplinary, where painting provides the basis to process such complex questions artistically in the form of a consecutively created series. By doing so, my most recent works expatiate on the roots of Pop Art in the epoch of Dadaism.
